Presentation Description: In this educational session, you will learn how symptoms of psychosis can present, and explore de-escalation techniques tailored to different situations. We’ll cover topics ranging from hallucinations and types of delusions to strategies clinicians can use to manage emotional dysregulation, power struggles, and crisis scenarios.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the different types of hallucinations and the severity of how impactful they can be.
  • List all the types of delusions and how they present themselves in clients.
  • Explain how to approach and apply intervention to someone experiencing escalation due to psychosis and other diagnoses.
  • Assess what techniques are being used to assist in de-escalation.
  • Identify the types of scenarios that will require de-escalation techniques like emotional dysregulation, power struggles and crisis situations.

About the Presenter: Jeff Thorfinnson, LPCC, LADC, NCC – With EOSIS for the past eight years, Jeff is currently the Treatment Director of EOSIS Northern Plains, a high-intensity MICD inpatient treatment facility. Previously, Jeff was the Adult Treatment Director at the high-acuity mental health hospital Red River Behavioral Health. In his career, Jeff has worked with both adolescents and adults with substance use disorders and high-acuity mental illnesses. Jeff has a passion for working with psychosis disorders, PTSD, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and cluster B personality disorders.
