Motivational Interviewing & Harm Reduction: A Practical Approach to Substance Use Disorders

Thursday, Aug 27, 2026 12:00PM(CT)

Join us for an engaging CE event focused on evidence-based care for clients experiencing substance use disorders (SUD). This session will explore practical, compassionate approaches for integrating Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Harm Reduction principles into daily clinical practice.

Participants will review real-world clinical frameworks for navigating client ambivalence, supporting individuals across varying levels of readiness for change, and enhancing engagement through client-centered communication strategies that balance clinical safety, autonomy, and the therapeutic alliance.

Participants will gain actionable tools and practical strategies that can be applied across outpatient, intensive outpatient (IOP), and community mental health settings. Key learning objectives include:

  • Describe the core spirit and skills of Motivational Interviewing (CAPE and OARS), including how the "righting reflex" can undermine patient engagement.
  • Differentiate between change talk and sustain talk in patient conversations, and apply specific response strategies for each.
  • Explain harm reduction as an evidence-based approach to substance use disorder, including its core principles and supporting research.
  • Identify practical ways to integrate MI and harm reduction in an integrated care/care management setting, even when a patient isn’t ready to reduce or stop use.
